Getting started

Do I need an account?

No. CurbSweep has no accounts or sign-in. Everything is saved on your iPhone.

How do I set up my area?

Open Settings, choose Around my current location (or the demo area), pick a size and tap Load streets. The street download needs an internet connection and usually takes 10 to 60 seconds.

Is it free?

Yes. CurbSweep is free, with no in-app purchases, subscriptions or ads.

Sectors, smoke & medals

Why is my map covered in smoke?

Your area is split into hexagon sectors about a mile across, and every sector starts undiscovered. Start a walk and step into a sector to discover it: the smoke clears and its streets appear. Tapping the re-center arrow while you're standing in a sector also discovers it.

What are Scouted, Mapped and Mastered?

They're tiers for each sector. Sweep 15% of a sector's streets for Scouted, 40% for Mapped and 80% for Mastered. See them in Explore, where you can filter Found and Uncharted sectors.

How do medals and ranks work?

Medals unlock for distance, new streets, finished streets, streaks, discoveries, goals and more. Explorer rank grows with XP from walking, new streets, discoveries and medals. See everything, plus your next milestones, in Rewards. Tap any medal for details.

Can I turn off the opening quote?

Yes. Tap the X to dismiss it, or turn it off in Settings → Preferences.

Recording walks

Does it keep recording when my phone is locked?

Yes. Once you tap Start walk, recording continues if you lock your phone or switch apps, and iOS shows a blue location indicator. It stops when you tap Stop walk. If you force-quit the app (swipe it away), iOS stops the recording.

Which location permission should I choose?

Choose Allow While Using App. That's all CurbSweep needs; it never asks for "Always". If you chose Don't Allow, turn it on in iOS Settings → CurbSweep → Location → While Using the App, and turn on Precise Location for accurate street matching.

A street I walked didn't get marked.

A GPS fix within about 50 feet of a street marks it, and fixes with poor accuracy (tall buildings, tunnels) are skipped. A street counts as done once 95% of its length is walked.

How much battery does it use?

GPS uses battery while a walk is recording, similar to other walking and running apps. CurbSweep doesn't use location when you're not recording.

Streets won't load.

Street data comes from free public OpenStreetMap servers, which are sometimes busy. CurbSweep tries several servers and retries automatically. Wait a minute and tap Load streets again, or try a smaller area.

Your data

How do I move my progress to a new iPhone?

Restore your new iPhone from an iCloud or computer backup, or use Settings → Backup → Export backup on the old phone and Import backup on the new one.

How do I delete a walk?

Open Walks, tap the walk, then tap Delete walk twice to confirm.

Erase your data

Open Settings → Start over → Reset all progress and tap it twice to confirm. This erases your walked streets, walks and routes, medals, discovered sectors and rank from your iPhone. It can't be undone. Deleting the app removes everything it stored. We don't hold any of your data, so there's nothing for us to delete. See the privacy policy for details.

Walk safely

Stay aware of traffic and your surroundings, follow local laws and don't enter private property or unsafe areas to complete a street. Map data may include roads that aren't safe or open to walkers. Use your own judgment.
